Solar and Battery Systems in Cairns: A Local Guide

How solar and battery storage works in Cairns and Far North Queensland, from wet season and backup to the federal battery discount and what to ask in your quote.

Cairns gets plenty of sun, but most households use the bulk of their power after it goes down. That gap between when your solar makes electricity and when you actually use it is the reason so many people across Cairns and Far North Queensland are asking about solar and battery storage. This guide covers how a solar battery works in the tropics, what the federal battery discount means for you, and what to check before you sign a quote.

Why solar and battery storage suits Cairns

A typical Cairns home makes most of its solar power in the middle of the day, often while everyone is at work or school. The air conditioning, cooking, lights and TV tend to run from late afternoon into the night. Without a battery, the solar power you don't use during the day is sent back to the grid, and you buy power back from the grid in the evening.

In regional Queensland, the feed-in tariff you're paid for exported solar is set each year by the Queensland Competition Authority, and it is usually well below the price you pay to buy electricity. A solar battery lets you keep more of your own solar energy and use it later in the day instead of selling it cheaply and buying it back.

Whether a battery stacks up for your place depends on your electricity use, your existing system and your plan. That is why every solar battery assessment in Cairns should start with your power bill, not a sales pitch.

How a solar battery works

During the day, your solar panels power the house first. Any extra energy charges the battery instead of going straight to the grid. When the sun drops and your solar output falls, the house draws from the battery. Once the battery runs low, you buy from the grid as normal.

Most home batteries connect through a hybrid inverter or a battery inverter, and many come with an app so you can see how much solar you're making, storing and using. If you already have solar, the type and age of your inverter will shape what can be added.

Solar batteries and Cairns weather

Heat and humidity

Batteries work best when they're installed in the right spot. In Far North Queensland that usually means out of direct afternoon sun, with good airflow and protection from the weather. Your installer should talk through where the battery will go before it goes on the wall, whether that's a garage, carport or shaded side of the house.

Wet season

Cloudy stretches during the wet season mean less solar generation. A battery can't make more sun, but it does help you use more of the solar you do get. It's worth looking at how your system performs across the whole year, not just on a clear dry-season day.

Storm and cyclone season

Many people in Cairns ask about keeping the lights on during an outage. Backup power is a specific feature, not something every battery setup includes. Some systems back up the whole house, some back up chosen circuits like the fridge, lights and internet, and some provide no backup at all. If backup matters to you, ask exactly which loads are covered and how the changeover works. We cover this in more detail in questions to ask about solar battery backup.

Adding a battery to existing solar in Cairns

You don't need a brand new solar system to add storage. Plenty of Cairns homes with existing panels are adding a battery now. The main things to check are your current inverter, the condition of your system, your switchboard and whether your setup can connect the battery you want.

Have your inverter details, installation paperwork and a recent electricity bill handy for the first conversation. Our guide to adding a battery to existing solar walks through what to have ready.

The federal battery discount

The Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program reduces the upfront cost of an eligible home or small business battery. It works through small-scale technology certificates, and in practice most people see it as a discount on their installation quote rather than a rebate they claim later.

A few things to know about how it works now:

  • The battery has to be installed with solar. A new or existing solar system qualifies, but a battery on its own doesn't.
  • The discount steps down every six months. The amount per kilowatt-hour reduces on a set schedule through to 2030, with the next reduction on 1 January 2027.
  • Bigger batteries get less per kilowatt-hour. Since 1 May 2026, the full rate applies to the first 14 kWh of usable capacity, with lower rates above that and nothing beyond 50 kWh.
  • It's one battery per property. Upgrading to a larger battery later won't earn a second discount, so it pays to size it right the first time.
  • Installation rules apply. The battery must be installed by an accredited installer using approved products, and the inverter it connects to must be able to join a virtual power plant.

Ask for the discount to be shown clearly on your quote so you can see the price before and after it's applied.

How big should your battery be?

Bigger isn't automatically better. The right battery size depends on how much power you use after dark, how big your solar system is and what you want the battery to do. A household that runs air conditioning every night needs a different setup to a couple who are out most evenings.

Your power bill shows how much electricity you use and when, which is why we start there. With the discount now tiered, matching the battery to your actual evening use matters more than ever. If you want a rough idea first, try our solar savings calculator.

Sigenergy batteries in Cairns

Ferrero Solar installs Sigenergy SigenStor battery systems for homes and businesses around Cairns. Sigenergy describes SigenStor as a modular energy storage system. The exact equipment, usable storage and features need to be specified for your property, so your proposal should spell them out. You can read more on our Sigenergy batteries page.

What to ask in a solar and battery quote

  • What equipment is being supplied, and what's the usable storage?
  • Will it work with my existing solar and inverter?
  • Is backup included, and which circuits does it cover?
  • Where will the battery be installed, and why there?
  • Is the federal battery discount applied, and how much is it?
  • What assumptions are behind any savings estimate?
  • Which warranties apply, and who do I call for support?

A good quote answers all of these in writing. If something is unclear, ask before you accept.

Solar and battery FAQs

Is a solar battery worth it in Cairns?

It depends on how much power you use in the evening, your solar system and your electricity plan. Because the feed-in tariff is usually much lower than the price of buying power, households with high evening use often get more value from storing their solar. A bill review is the best way to find out for your home.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

Often, yes. It depends on your inverter, the condition of your system and your switchboard. An assessment will confirm what's compatible.

Will a battery keep my power on in a blackout?

Only if backup is included in your setup. Ask which circuits are backed up before you go ahead, because not every battery installation provides backup.

Do I need solar to get the battery discount?

Yes. Under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, the battery must be installed with a new or existing solar system.
